Preliminary Task – Camera Shots Story (#3)

This was our third blog of the year. Today, August 28, my group of three worked together for this project. Our photographer of this project is Veronica C and the two people in the shots are Maya I (me), and Jalen H.

This shot is an Long shot. It shows myself walking on the sidewalk, on a sunny day. This shot shows I'm relaxed.

This shot is a Point of View shot. It shows myself looking down noticing that my shoe isn't tied. This shot is to let the viewer know I don't know how to tie my shoe.

This is an over the shoulder shot. It shows myself looking over, seeing Jalen sitting in the grass, on his phone. This shot is to show my attention on Jalen.

This shot is a Two shot, showing Jalen and myself talking. I'm asking Jalen if he can tie my shoe for me. This shot is to show we're comfortable with each other.

This shot is a Close-up shot, showing Jalen tying my shoe. This shot continues the conversation, showing that he said "yes" to my question, doing me the favor of tying my shoe.

Something I learned about shot choice affecting the meaning of the shot is that different shots can mean different things with a simple choice of the wrong shot and lighting. What I will carry forward into my main project is to deliberate with my group to debate on the different shots that can affect our final product that may or may not give a different meaning to what we originally wanted the viewer(s) to feel and understand.

Preliminary Task - My Media Skills Audit (#2)

Today we learned about camera shots and angles. It was a cool and interesting lesson.

Planning and organizing production work and using a camera are skills I'm most confident in because I have the most experience in those from past classwork and classes. I’ve had to record and edit videos in theater, ELA classes. That is what sparked my interest in camera work and editing. A few skills I need to work on are using lighting equipment/natural light effectively and analyzing how camera shots/angles create meaning. These skills are some that I know little about and need to explore more to understand what they can contribute to camera work. On the other hand, I wish to focus on using editing techniques to create meaning and using video editing software to further my experience in camera work and editing. I want to focus on these because they are the foundation on camera editing and camera work.

Preliminary Task - My First Steps into Media Studies (#1)

Hello world, I’m Maya Inman, a 10th grader. A couple fun facts about me are that I have 4 siblings (two brothers and 2 sisters) and I’m the oldest sibling. I have two cats (Milo and Kevin), and I like to read. I chose Media Studies to take a step into the media world and to understand how media affects our everyday lives as a community and personally.

A few things I hope to learn in this class this year is to learn editing skills, the different types of sounds and camera shots, and get better in analysis. Some skills I want to develop are more technical skills, like how to give a message with certain camera shots and sounds. These skills will help me understand movies on a better level and understand why directors choose to do the shots that they do.

I feel nervous and excited at the same time about taking this class because it’s something new that I haven’t done before. Media is something that I would like to explore in the future as a hobby, so this class will help me further my research. I’m mostly looking forward to the two-minute film that I will create with my classmates. I believe that the two-minute film would be really fun to work on and cool to see our final product.

The type of media I consume the most is YouTube and music. This type of media is my way of relaxing after a long day of school and homework. They also show me my interest in different forms; a picture, music, or a video. I do think I’m on these media for a long period of time, here and there, which sometimes can affect if I get something done in time like my chores or school work. On the other hand, I have been working on that and trying my best to do my chores and homework before I use these different media forms, which has been going great for me.

Looking ahead, I think Media Studies will challenge me to stay on track with my work. This class is fun but has a lot of work that needs to be done and can’t be left for last minute. I’m most excited about the two-minute film, and I hope by the end of the course I will be able to complete my goal of wanting to get more experienced with media work, like camera shots and sound usages.
