Preliminary Task - Cheater, Cheater, Pumpkin Eater - 30 second video (#4)

Today, September 10, 2025, we had an assignment to make a thirty second video, with no dialogue, of a story. Today my group (Jody, Jalen, Veronica, and I) made a video about Jalen needing the answers to homework he had forgotten about. He got the answers from Jody then cheated off of her. Veronica was our camera(wo)man and one of our directors. I was the second director, secondary actor, and editor. Jalen was our main actor; Jody was another secondary actor.

Editing this project was fun because I was able to play around with sound effects and background music. It was pretty cool to start my journey of editing in our media studies class with my group. Before cutting down the video, the video was about a minute long with our biggest shot being when my teacher, Ms. Ortiz, caught Jalen cheating and walking towards his direction; the shot was 15 seconds. My biggest challenge of editing this video was making sure that each sound effect lined up where it needed to be and that it gave the comedic effect that my group and I were aiming for. Editing this video took about 30 minutes, the main factor that took the longest being the sound effects and lining up the shots. This project was really fun and enjoyable. It made my group laugh a lot while shooting this video.

If there was something I would redo is the last scene of Ms. Ortiz walking down to Jalen. I would've changed that to two shots instead of one to show the shock of Jalen seeing Ms. Ortiz. Experimenting with shots and composition helps me when I film my 2-minute opening, giving me experience with the different shots, editing, and angles. This will help me plan for the Cambridge project because it will give me practice and trial and error for the 2-minute film opening. Overall, this assignment taught me that I can practice the many skills of planning for the final product, production, and overcoming the challenges of film.
